For Daddy

My Daddy wrote me this email and song today. He wrote this because he loves me, he likes me, he misses me and he wants me to have a fun time at my swim class. Monday, March 31, 2008. By Annie.

Here is the song:

I'm a little fish
Swish, swish, swish
Splashing all around
Kicking up and down

Annie wrote the above for the blog and below is the email that daddy wrote for her. She loved it sooo much that she had to illustrate it. She turned herself into a mermaid.

Dear Annie,

You're a little fish
Swish swish swish
Splashing all around
Kicking up and down

Pretend that I am there today with you, giving you high fives as you
put your face in the water, saying "Great job Annie!"

I'll give you kisses and hugs when I get home!

Love Daddy

Visitors From South Carolina

Our friends Sean, Meg and Caitlin visited from South Carolina this past week. (Sean and Mike have been friends for over 20 years, since high school). The kiddos hit it off wonderfully. It was really sweet.

We spent time visiting Lake Travis and having lunch at the Sunset Capital of Texas, GeoCaching, walking, swimming, playing, exploring Natural Bridge Caverns, coloring easter eggs, playing on the swing set, gaming, playing disc golf and just hanging out. One of the highlights of the visit was that both girls had loose teeth and Caitlin's came out and the Tooth Fairy found her in Annie's room. (Yes, Annie discovered her first loose tooth!)

You guys were awesome guests. Please come back any time! Thanks for visiting and we'll see you soon! Myrtle Beach Here we come!!

Here's Emer's Owl. He hasn't named it yet but my guess is that he'll name it either "Owley" or "Meechoconta"......

St. Patrick's Day News

.
We didn't see the rainbow but since it is St Patrick's Day and it rained and the sun was shining we decided to go out and listen for the hammering of the Leprechaun. We searched for these little men with our binoculars and our magnifying glasses.

We searched in the back yard and behind the fence in the park. Gramma Jan spotted the red socks first, then Emerson spotted a flash of green. Could it be... In an instant he was gone.

Our search continued. We heard hammering in the front yard. We rushed to the front to find our wearin' o the green fairie man.

Just then the noisy garbage truck zoomed past our house and in an instant there was a gleaming Pot of Gold in our bushes.

The Leprechaun must have been spooked and left it in our bushes for safe keeping. WOW!!! Was it HEAVY! Emerson did a real Irish Jig when he saw it and Annie jumped up and down for joy!

In other St. Paddy's Day News:

Gramma Jan and Great Gram came over for a real Irish Celebration. Wearing our decorated hats and crowns Gramma Jan and the kids made real Irish Soda Bread and we all enjoyed it along with our Flag of Ireland plates (Green, White and Orange) green olives, green pickles, green apple slices, an orange cheese clover, an orange clementine and white Soda Bread. THANKS Gramma Jan for preparing our St Patrick's Day celebration!

Family News...

Uncle Jeremy even came over to introduce us to the newest member of our family: Digger who lived up to his name by trying to dig up our newly planted marigolds....Here is the proud daddy with Jinx and Digger!

Gonna Make This Garden Grow -- Organically

We planted our garden today! We planted tomatoes, zucchini, leaf lettuce, cilantro, marigolds and zinnia's. Then we mulched it with Pine Straw Mulch.

Many THANKS to Mike for working so hard over the past several weekends preparing the bed for us. Simply digging in our yard is treacherous. We have very thick grass (it's like a carpet), about 1 inch of soil and lots and lots of limestone. We've planted in a raised bed....and we used native limestone to enclose the bed. This is better than treated wood because no dangerous chemicals should leach in to our veggies.

Come join us soon for some homemade salsa, zucchini bread and a yummy salad!

Texas Two Step....

image: democraticstuff.com

The Texas primary elections were Tuesday March 4, 2008.

In Texas we get to vote for 14 days prior to the actual voting day (at the grocery store). This is very convenient.

But your vote only counts as 2/3 and not 1 whole vote. Until you vote in the caucus. (this is how it seems to me, please correct me if I am wrong)

But in order to vote in the caucus you must have your voter registration card "stamped". In order to get a stamp you also must say out loud (in front of the entire line of voters) what party you are voting for (this was odd for me, since in NY this information is very private). So you get your card stamped and vote.

What is a Caucus?

I really don't understand it....but I lived it tonight. In order for a candidate to win a primary in the state of Texas...2/3 of their delegates are decided by popular vote and 1/3 is decided by caucus delegates. So I interpret this as.....Our vote only counts for 2/3 of a vote. Yes, two thirds. In order to have our vote count as one whole vote we must attend our district caucus. Mike and I attended our precinct convention or caucus tonight.

In order to caucus you must show up at your poling place before 7:15 but no earlier than 7:00. You must stand at least 100 feet from the door. After the last person votes (which last night was about 7:30) and after the ballot machines have been removed from the building (The ballot machines have left the building) than we were invited in. We all took our seats (for 30 seconds). Then they called all of the Obama supporters to get up and sit on one side of the room. Then they asked all of the Hillary supporters to sit on the other side of the room. The master of ceremonies gave us some instructions (blah, Whah, whah, whah). We were told to complete the caucus form (piece of paper filled in with a pen). We were asked to provide our names, our voter id #, address, email, phone, candidate, gender, age, whether we were lesbian or gay and some other private information.

We could than leave, if we wanted to. If we cared to stay we could be chosen as a delegate, who is someone who travels to the state convention and than maybe the national convention. As well as vote on other bills and amendments or bills.

Bill Clinton summed it up nicely when he said, "It's the only place in the country where you can vote twice in the same election and not get in trouble for doing it. So you might as well take advantage of it."

I really adore the Clinton's but I think Obama has a better chance of winning the presidential election against Mc Cain. I think people have a love hate relationship with Hillary. My main concern is that it is a democrat in the White House next year. I will be satisfied with Obama or Clinton as long as it is not McCain.

Just my confused 2 cents.

Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful... Beautiful Boy...

Here is another picture that Annie took of her little bro.....

Let's go fly a kite!

This is daddy here...I took the kids on a special date today to the Zilker Park Kite Festival (http://www.zilkerkitefestival.com).

Since this festival is so popular, they have a bus service from a downtown parking area. This was a highlight of the trip for the kids, since they got to ride on a school bus! Emerson said it was neat that it was so bumpy, and they both thought it was great that they didn't have to wear seat belts (sorry Mom).

Anyway, once we got there, Annie took over with the camera and got lots of photos...I'm posting two of the shots she took here. Annie said that her favorite kite had 'Hello Kitty' on it, and she also liked ours (right). She said it reminded her of Old Glory. This is the kite that Ryan and Jenny bought for my birthday a few years ago. Emerson tried to help me fly it, but it was so windy it almost pulled him off the ground!

We had a great time, and next year we'll be sure to get there earlier so that we can make a whole day of it!

-Mike
